However, you're a long drive even from Coquitlam and Langley, much less big cities like Surrey and Vancouver, and an even longer commute on transit.
As for the homeless people and drug addicts, it's the same as with every other city.
While I do miss the mountain hikes of Coquitlam, you still get a nice selection of farmland and greenbelts to hike on, while still being only a few minute walk from a major shopping area.
One house on 228th near Dewdney that was a bit freaky to pass by since it always had 5+ cars and a caged garage with pissed off dogs in the front, but Im guessing just auto enthusiasts tired of getting their stuff stolen.

I lived in a nice neighbourhood, not downtown, so there were no problems with crime or drug use, but I had to buy a car because there's no bus service.
